Though better known for its fortified wines, Portugal, and northern Portugal in particular also produces a few excellent table wines, the better ones based on the Touriga Nacional grape, normally used to make Port, but also used extensively in the Ribera del Duero region to produce full-bodied reds. It’s not just about the Touriga Nacional grape, though, Portugal has around 500 regional varieties of grape (the Castas), though only some are authorised in the demarcated regions of Portugal’s Denominacao de Origem Controlada, which regulates the quality of each casta.
